This paper outlines a strategic initiative aimed at supporting and enhancing the current Italian landscape of artificial intelligence startups through the creation of a national ecosystem that, channeled through the “Ente Nazionale per l'Intelligenza Artificiale” (hereinafter E.N.I.A.), can get competitiveness and responsible innovation off the ground. Taking due consideration of the current European legal-economic framework, the recommendations outlined in the latest “Draghi Report” and the recent “AI Continent Action Plan” published by the European Commission, the project aims to promote ethical, responsible and sustainable development with respect to the future challenges. The three pillars accompanying this initiative are: visibility, through a constant and capillary push in showing the institutional, public and private sector the high-value projects of the national territory (especially to attract and encourage investment); responsibility, through the establishment of specific training programs not only in the technical and ethical sphere, but also and above all entrepreneurial (creation, management and profitability of an innovative startup); and ability, through the development of a network of qualified mentors and reward mechanisms towards the existing (and upcoming) talented realities of our territory.
